Housing

Low-income families with children, disabled individuals and the elderly are some of our most vulnerable neighbors. The Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP) and state-funded public housing can provide options.

MRVP provides housing stability and security to more than 6,665 extremely low income households.

Despite significant restorations to MRVP, the number of households experiencing housing instability and homelessness persists as Massachusetts remains one of the most expensive states in the nation to live:
  • 229,600 MA low income renters pay more than 50% of their monthly income for housing alone.
  • With a median income of $1,300/month and rents of $1,170/month, many low income renters are left with only $130/month for food and other necessities.
  • Common setbacks such as job loss, illness, lack of childcare or missed child support payments often result in evictions and homelessness.
There is more to be done.
